Fight for MD Library Worker Collective Bargaining Legislation On the Horizon

We are preparing to fight for the passing of legislation that will enable Maryland Public Library Workers the right to organize and collectively bargain.

Delegate Jared Solomon (D-18) has agreed to sponsor the bill in the Maryland House and we are very close to announcing a sponsor in the Maryland Senate. A coalition of Maryland library unions have worked on the bill’s language and it is a top priority for Labor in the upcoming general session.

Library workers in counties around Maryland have recently expressed interest in forming a union. Montgomery County and Prince George’s County have been union since the 1980’s, Baltimore County voted to become union in 2021. Enoch Pratt workers won their election in 2022 and Howard County is preparing for an election. With the passage of statewide legislation, public library workers in counties across Maryland can do the same, if they so choose.
